Should you wear earplugs when playing saxophone?

It depends on what kind of music you're practicing/rehearsing for. But earplugs aren't a normal part of practicing/playing a saxophone. It's better to alter your practice environment.

What reeds did John Coltrane use?

John Coltrane Coltrane achieved his distinctive, harsh-but-beautiful tenor saxophone sound with the help of a metal mouthpiece. He experimented with various Otto Link Tonemasters, which are noted for their projection and durability, usually with a relatively narrow 5 or 6 facing, in tandem with fairly hard Rico reeds.
