That's very subjective. The biggest difference is in playability. A heavier string will allow for a heavier plucking hand and will be more physically demanding to play; a lighter string will be easier on the left (aka fingering, sorry left-handers!) hand.

How often should you change strings on a mandolin?

You should be changing your mandolin strings dependant on the amount of time used and their condition. If you are playing daily for over 1 hour (30 – 40 hours of playing time), you should be able to get one month of optimum tone, and this will start to roll off at the end of this time frame.
